Tikaboo Peak is an 8,000 ft mountain approximately 26 miles from the infamous Air Force Flight Test Center at Groom Lake, NV -aka Area 51. Tikaboo Peak is one of the last places where you can actually see the base legally. The turn off for Tikaboo Peak is between the Upper and Lower Lakes in the Pahraganat Valley near Alamo, NV. From there you travel down a well maintained dirt road until a few hundred yards from the trailhead. Depending on what type of vehicle you have you may want to hike in. If you have a high clearance 4WD vehicle you can drive right to the "Lower Staging Area" where you can camp for the night before the hike. If you got a pair, you can drive up to the "Upper Staging Area" and save yourself about 500 feet of the climb. From there it is a somewhat strenuous 1.2 mile hike up 1,000 feet in elevation. The first 2,500 feet is the worse climbing up a the steepest part of the hill covered in loose shale. From there it actually becomes fun as you past the "False Summit" and "Rocky Outcrop" to the "Saddle." From there you start back up the hill until you reach the first view of the base and another good spot to camp. The last 600 feet is my favorite part as you climb up the hill covered with boulders and not that dangerous loose shale! At the end you are rewarded with a magnificent view of the Tikaboo Valley and of course Area 51! I recommend climbing this mountain in the late spring to early fall to avoid the excessive heat. I also climb just before sunset to arrive at the campsite just below the summit and spend the night watching the base for activity. I finish the hike in the early morning to get the best pictures of the base before the heat distorts the atmosphere. There is no water source anywhere along the trip so pack all you can carry!
