The Context The Albuquerque United States Courthouse is located on the edge of downtown Albuquerque directly adjacent to the downtown commercial district and near the Albuquerque Alvarado Transportation Center. While the building itself was thought of as a future landmark building for the southwestern city, utilizing the 4.5-acre site for a federal courthouse was also conceptualized as an economic development tool for the city. At seven stories in height, the courthouse includes one Special Proceedings Courtroom, nine District Courtrooms as well as Pretrial Services and Probation Offices. In 1993, Flatow Moore Shaffer McCabe, a local design firm, began the design of the building. Six years later, in 1996, construction began with the officially opening in 1999. , The Building The building was designed and conceptualized around the notion of light. Beginning with the seven-story atrium space which organizes the courts program in a radial parti, light finds its way into the spaces of the midrise tower building. To facilitate this, the program was divided into two distinct pieces. The first, which includes the Offices of the Court and other court services, is housed in the main podium volume of the building. The second piece, which includes the courtrooms and chambers, is situated on the floors above. On the façade, the influences of local southwestern architecture were incorporated through the articulation of the glass panels and the balcony areas. With this in mind, the materiality and detailing of the two programmatic sections are visually apparent in the finish treatments of the stone cladding. The only other differentiation occurs at the main entry, which was treated with a pergola inspired entry hall. The exterior walls of the building are clad in natural and cut stone. The building¿s windows are double glazed in aluminum frames. The main lobby and public areas are all finished in stucco, granite, gypsum and wall board. Within the courtrooms, the walls were correspondingly finished in wood, gypsum and wall board. While the current build out of the Courthouse provides enough courtrooms for the existing jurisdiction, future expansion options were considered during the programming process. Based on site size and location, if expansion is needed, parcels directly adjacent to the courthouse can be acquired for an annex building.
